The Situation On The Korean Peninsula

The United States, along with South Korea, is currently in a standstill along the 38th parallel on the Korean peninsula. The 38th parallel, dubbed the demilitarized zone (or DMZ), is the border between North and South Korea. Despite its name, the DMZ is heavily militarized by both sides as a result of the tensions between the U.S. and N. Korea.

I believe, in order to reduce the tensions between them, The United States must decrease its military presence on the Korean Peninsula which could provoke North Korea. By having a strong military presence in N. Korea's front yard, they clearly feel threatened, and continue to launch missile tests.

The United States went to war with Korea in 1950 and the fighting lasted for 3 years until an armistice was signed to end the physical war. Now there is a stalemate along the border, and the Koreas remain divided, militarized, and volatile. The U.S. originally went to war with North Korea and the Soviets largely for political reasons, rather than military disputes. The haste of the Unites States to go to war in Korea cost over 30,000 American lives and over 100,000 wounded. Not only did the war cost American lives, but the human casualties were astronomical. Over 2 million human casualties were reported during the 3 years of fighting over something that could arguable have been solved diplomatically.
