Preventing War Diplomatically

In the year 1962, The U.S. was threatened with military force by The Soviet Union in an event that became known as The Cuban Missile Crisis. The USSR had set up numerous missile launch site all across the Caribbean country of Cuba. The Cuban leader, Fidel Castro, was sentimental to the Russians cause, and the communist movement. Castro made a deal with the Soviets to protect Cuba from any further invasions by the United States (previous being the failed Bay Of Pigs invasion by the CIA). United States President John F. Kennedy and his team of advisers began talks with the Soviet Premier, Nikita Khrushchev, in order to prevent any military action that could spark a World War. Kennedy and his team made their stance clear that they would not allow offensive weapons in Cuba. The U.S. set up a blockade of naval ships around the island nation. The USSR felt that this was an "act of aggression" and they continued to supply Cuba with offensive missiles. It seemed to Kennedy and his team that there was no end to the crisis in sight, and that a military invasion of Cuba to remove the missiles might be necessary. Kennedy, however, decided to pursue the diplomatic route just a bit longer. Khrushchev realized that any further provocation of the United States would lead to a global nuclear holocaust. He agreed to remove the missiles and launch sites in exchange for the U.S. guaranteeing to not invade Cuba. The U.S. also removed their Jupiter missiles from Turkey in a non-public part of the agreement.

The United States came very close to engaging in a global war in 1962, but the diplomacy of President Kennedy and Soviet Premier Khrushchev prevented a nuclear holocaust.

The Current U.S. President, Donald J. Trump is in a similar situation with Kim Jong Un in North Korea. Trump has threatened military action numerous times, and the N. Koreans continue to launch test missiles. The diplomatic solution is to stop provoking the nuclear power and
